LOOK AT YOU!
11 channel video installation (2011)
This project is based on exploration of the concept of fear visualization, therefore methods of its evocation through contemporary audio-visual media. Contemporary visualization of fear has been closely connected with horror films. Through their retrospective observation and study, we are able to trace the development of audio-visual methods used to evoke fear and uneasiness to audience. Specific focus of this artwork is theoretical and historical context of using children’s characters in order to cause fear, following the question about possible correlation between the former and irrational fear of children - pedophobia.
Video installation Look at You!, examines the possibilities and limits of perceptual transformation of the given element and its context. The video puts an observer to the test, indicating mass, often unfounded use of child characters in horror films as a trigger for desired emotional reaction. Toying with scenes in which child characters appear, children are looking directly at the camera, while being followed by audio performance of a young girl, who sings famous (serbian) child's sad song about death of a yellow flower. The video removes action and horrifying visualization - from horror films villains child characters adopt only severe attitude and fixed gaze on their victim. From that point, an observer decides whether to undergo transformation into the role of a target of objective observation and to experience the horror or stay aside, comprehending purely audio-visual aesthetics of the artwork.
